Metformin

Indications:
Antihyperglycemic agent used for treating non-insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus (NIDDM)

Dosage:
500 to 2000 mg daily in divided doses

Mechanism of Action:
Decreases blood glucose levels by decreasing hepatic glucose production, decreasing intestinal absorption of glucose, and improving insulin sensitivity by increasing peripheral glucose uptake and utilization

Side Effects:
Associated with modest weight loss; lactic acidosis, diarrhoea, nausea, nausea and vomiting, and flatulence
