Gentamicin

Indications:
Antibiotic; Effective in bacterial neonatal sepsis; bacterial septicemia; and serious bacterial infections of the central nervous system (meningitis), urinary tract, respiratory tract, gastrointestinal tract (including peritonitis), skin, bone and soft tissue (including burns)

Dosage:
Adult – 5 mg/Kg over 30 to 60 minutes by IV route
Paediatric – 3 mg/Kg over 30 to 60 minutes by IV route

Mechanism of Action:
As an aminoglycoside, it binds to the prokaryotic ribosome, inhibiting protein synthesis in susceptible bacteria

Side Effects:
Nausea, vomiting, stomach upset, loss of appetite, and injection site reactions
